About Me And My Journey To Employment Law

I grew up on the island of Hawaii, and despite coming from a lower-middle-class background, I was fortunate enough to attend a private college prep high school. The school’s curriculum was tailored to prepare students for careers in areas like law, medicine, and engineering.

This experience profoundly helped shape my path early on. I always felt my natural abilities aligned well with the skills needed to become a lawyer—being able to think clearly and logically. Plus, I’ve always enjoyed debating, which seemed quite fitting for becoming an attorney.

One moment that solidified my interest in becoming a lawyer occurred when I was about eight years old. I was with my mom in traffic court, and I remember the judge giving her a hard time. My mom had to stand there quietly, but I distinctly recall thinking, No one’s going to treat my mom like that! It drove my desire to be in a position where I could speak up and advocate for others, especially in tough situations. Looking back, it was one of the key reasons I ended up pursuing a legal career, eventually finding my way to employment law, where I could continue to stand up for people facing challenges in the workplace.

Career-Shaping Moments

One moment that I look back on and see profoundly influenced the trajectory of my career is when I was about 18 months into practicing law. Like many new lawyers fresh out of law school, I had a lot to learn about the day-to-day realities of the job. When you first start, you’re what we call a baby lawyer: you might understand legal theory, but you’re not yet familiar with the practical side of being a lawyer—especially the ins and outs of litigation and how to handle cases from start to finish.

During this time, I was fortunate to have excellent mentors, especially a senior litigation partner at the large firm where I worked at the time. He had an impressive roster of Fortune 50 and Fortune 500 clients, and under his guidance, I flourished as a litigation attorney. One key moment was when he entrusted me, a relatively inexperienced lawyer, with my first plaintiff’s deposition.

In employment law, especially in cases involving large corporate defendants, conducting a deposition is huge. It’s where an attorney can question someone under oath and gather information that can be used in trial. My mentor’s decision to let me handle this after just 18 months was a significant honor and a massive vote of confidence in my abilities. Though I was nervous, it was an incredible chance to prove myself and gain invaluable experience.

This moment truly marked the beginning of my growth as a litigation lawyer and set the stage for the rest of my career. I am so grateful I was afforded the opportunity and had the capacity to seize it.

I hope you come away with a deeper understanding of the importance of being proactive rather than reactive. Once a lawsuit is filed, even if a business wins the case, they’ve already lost in some sense due to the costs involved—paying their own lawyer, the former employee, and the employee’s attorney. My aim is to equip you with the tools you need to prevent these costly lawsuits from happening in the first place.
